Westside Mission / NOLA
Leaders: Mike & Pat Hoskin
One of the outreach missions of MCCC since 2008 has been centered around relief efforts in New Orleans from the effects of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Westside Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has hosted us and coordinated the work each year. They provide comfortable living arrangements for us for
a week of work, mostly in the Lower Ninth Ward and other hard-hit areas.
The first year of this mission consisted of 30 people from Mantua Center, Brighter Day, and Hilltop Church. The second year, we doubled the number of volunteers and also recruited members from Hiram Christian Church and First Christian Church of Stow to join us, and interest continues to grow in this rewarding mission effort. We have rehabbed several homes and helped establish temporary housing for returning residents. In 2009 we also contributed to the restoration of The Greater New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church that had been devastated in the flood waters.
All or the participating churches have generously supported the volunteers by hosting dinners, reverse raffles, auctions, quilt raffles, and other fundraising efforts. Three weeks in February 2010 have already been reserved for 25 volunteers per week. All who have participated found this to be rewarding work that needs to be done, regardless of skill level. Hope to see you in New Orleans!
